The future for residential houseboats is unclear as the Auckland Council Unitary Plan, currently being considered, places restrictions on the locations where boats can be permanently occupied. Waiheke is one of, if the not the, only place in the Auckland area where people reside on boats outside of marinas. While some cite the houseboats as being iconic, others decry them as an eyesore or express concern on the impact on neighbouring public amenities.
